Position Summary

The Engineer provides analysis and planning for the Cooperative's distribution system, organizes and maintains Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) systems, and maintains the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and Smart Grid networks while providing technical support to the Engineering Department.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Engineering Planning

  • Assist in designing system improvements.

  • Prepare and update records for the system work plan, power requirement study, and long-range plan.

  • Develop plans and schedules to improve sectionalizing, distribution, transmission, and substations.

  • Assist in developing the Engineering Department budget and work plan.

  • Assist in determining the optimum configuration of cooperative facilities so that dependable and economical electric service is available to all members.

  • Assist in the preparation of construction schedules and procurement of materials.


SCADA

  • Build and maintain the SCADA and Smart Grid network.

  • Develop programs and design control systems for substation and distribution SCADA systems.

  • Monitor and maintain cyber security for the SCADA and Smart Grid network.


Technical Support

  • Review and monitor Cooperative in-house technical studies such as transformer loading, voltage drops, fault currents, line feasibility, sectionalizing, and load balance.

  • Help ensure that all maps are current and available for end users.

  • Assist in preparing technical studies, construction contracts, and construction plans.

  • Collaborate with engineering consulting firms and contractors.

  • Assist in system sectionalizing and the programming and testing of protection relays.

  • Aid users with engineering internal software and systems.


Other Related Duties

  • Ensure that core facilities such as substations, distribution systems, transmission systems, load management, communications systems, metering systems, and engineering servers are operational and updated.

  • Assists with the Cooperative's load curtailment program.

  • Aid the VP of Engineering in the completion of all reports supplied by the Engineering department.

  • Aid in the evaluation of net metering applications.

  • Recommend improvements that can be made in practices, methods, processes, and procedures within the area of this job responsibility.

  • Will properly use and keep in good condition all tools and equipment.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field.

Desired

  • State of Arkansas Professional Engineering License

  • Two (2) years of experience in an Engineering role within an electric utility environment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the electric utility industry and distribution system, engineering practices, substation and distribution line specifications, and major feeder locations.

  • Skill in mathematical calculations.

  • Skill and proficiency in the use of computers, copiers, calculators, and Microsoft Office Platforms.

  • Skill in verbal and written communication.

  • Skill in time management, organization, and attention to detail.

  • Skill in analytical and critical thinking for analyzing complex problems, evaluating options, and developing resolutions.

  • Ability to possess knowledge of engineering practices, power equations and calculations, and relaying specifications and requirements.

  • Ability to prioritize the completion of multiple, time-sensitive tasks, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to exhibit a professional and courteous demeanor.

  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to understand, interpret, and observe Craighead Electric policies, procedures, programs, and safety rules and regulations to effectively carry out job duties.


Special Requirements

  • Must have a valid Driver's License.

  • Will be subject to 24-hour call out.

  • Ability to obtain a State of Arkansas Professional Engineering License within four (4) years of employment.


Working Conditions and Mental or Physical Requirements

The following characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job. Must be able to remain in a stationary position continuously. Will frequently move inside or outside the office space. Position will continuously operate a computer and other office machinery and communicate with others. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and work near moving mechanical parts. Work is generally performed indoors and occasionally performed outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is moderately low. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; continuously lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
