Position Summary

The Substation Technician installs and maintains substations, devices, relays, and equipment on the Cooperative's power system. This role will read schematics and maintain substation drawings, along with conducting tests on relays, breakers, and switches.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Substations

  • Monitor substation power transformers including all maintenance, bushing replacements, pressure adjustments, and oil leaks.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with outside stakeholders on substation equipment repairs and maintenance.

  • Conduct an annual gas analysis.

  • Install mobile transformers.

  • Perform switching on transmission lines and substations.

  • Ensure switching procedures in substations and distribution lines and secure appropriate clearances from the Distribution Operations Control (DOC) Center.

  • Assist with reading schematics, termination of control cable, and completion of work for construction and substations.

  • Complete final markups on As-Built substation drawing and wiring schematics.

  • Prepare and maintain monthly substation, regulator, and relay routes and checklists.

  • Analyze and repair substation breakers, regulators, and circuit switches.


Devices

  • Conduct tests on electronic relays, hydraulic breakers, switches, distribution breakers, and circuit switches.

  • Assist the Engineering team with installation, repair, and testing of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment, electronic re-closers, capacitor controls, and load controls.

  • Install and maintain load control relays.

  • Install and maintain surge protectors.

  • Install and maintain primary and secondary meters.

  • Install and maintain fiber optic communications cable in substations and on devices in the field.


Other Related Duties

  • Perform electrical work and repairs on Cooperative property.

  • Perform restoration duties on distribution and transmission lines.

  • Assist construction with the installation of any electronic devices installed on lines or substations.

  • Recommend improvements that can be made in practices, methods, processes, and procedures within the area of this job responsibility.

  • Will properly use and keep in good condition all tools and equipment.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.

  • Attend safety meetings.


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Two (2) years of experience in an electrical or related role.

Desired

  • Journeyman Electrician License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the electric utility industry.

  • Knowledge of transmission and distribution substation voltages and layout.

  • Skill in schematics and drawing.

  • Skill in operating machinery.

  • Skill and proficiency in the use of computers, copiers, calculators, and Microsoft Office Platforms (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Skill in verbal and written communication.

  • Skill in time management, organization, and attention to detail.

  • Skill in analytical and critical thinking for analyzing complex problems, evaluating options, and developing resolutions.

  • Ability to prioritize the completion of multiple, time-sensitive tasks, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to exhibit a professional and courteous demeanor.

  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to understand, interpret, and observe Craighead Electric policies, procedures, programs, and safety rules and regulations to effectively carry out job duties.


Special Requirements

  • Must have a valid Driver's License.

  • Will be subject to 24-hour call out.

  • Must be able to work long shifts during emergencies and outage restoration events.

  • Ability to obtain Forklift certification within six (6) months of employment.


Working Conditions and Mental or Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock; occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Work is performed outside and in all types of weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear; and frequently required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; continuously lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; and depth perception.
